Mass Effect 2

Steven van Hemert | 09 March, 2010 00:310 Comments

The original Mass Effect, released late in 2007, took the science fiction role-playing game to new heights. Courting controversy for the inclusion of a brief alien-human sex scene, the game redefined the genre with a compelling combination of fast-paced shooter action, deep characterisation and innovative dialogue system that placed the gamer in near complete control of the story.

Mass Effect 2 continues with the apocalyptic story arc of the original, and in a move that is sure to become far more commonplace in game design, creates a seamless transition between the two games by loading player's save files from the original. This means that the various choices your character made in the original - from details of their appearance to their moral stand on issues - translates into the sequel. This high level of customisation has led critics to call Mass Effect2 one of the most personal games ever made.

Players once again take control of Commander Shepard, but for the rest, things are a little different from the original. The largely incidental side quests of the original are gone, as are the tedious exploration missions, making the game far more focused. The bulky inventory management system has also been refined.

Though Mass Effect 2 is a polished third person shooter, it's the quality of the characters that really make the game. Some familiar faces from the original return for a second run, with a host of new characters joining your team, including some irresponsibly saucy female comrades.

Verdict

9 / 10

The Good

Gorgeous graphics, intense shooter action, streamlined game design, compelling storyline.

The Bad

Teammate AI is dysfunctional at times and the planet scanning mechanic is still far too tedious.

The Damage

R650 (Xbox 360), R400 (PC).
