While Modern Warfare 3 was Amazon's best-selling boxed video game in 2011, it couldn't climb higher than 8th in the retailer's PC download chart, where Deus Ex reigned supreme.

According to charts published by games website Joystiq, several titles performed comparatively better as digital downloads.

Physical, boxed products
1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
2. Just Dance 3
3. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
4. Battlefield 3
5. Batman: Arkham City
6. Madden NFL 12
7. Portal 2
8. Just Dance 2
9. Gears of War 3
10. FIFA Soccer 12

Digital downloads
1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
2. Battlefield 3
3. The Sims 3
4. Battlefield Bad Company 2
5. Sid Meier's Civilization V
6. Dead Island
7. Total War: Shogun 2
8. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3
9. Crysis 2
10. Dragon Age 2

Some absences are due to their unavailability on PC (Just Dance 3, Madden NFL 12 and Gears of War 3), while others are carried by other download merchants (Portal 2 on Steam; Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2 on Origin and competitors; Skyrim on Direct2Drive, Steam and Impulse).

What the charts do show is that, as far as Amazon's downloading customers were concerned, Battlefield 3 held greater appeal than competitor Modern Warfare 3, The Sims 3's age was no boundary to sales (first released in 2009), and cleverly timed discount pricing can go a long long way, especially as far as Deus Ex: Human Revolution was concerned: the award-winner went from $50 at launch to $10 by the year's end.
