Valve Software, creator of the Half-Life and Portal series and operator of dominant download portal Steam, is angling for a 2013 beta test of various new hardware prototypes.

Speaking to Engadget, Valve employee and reknowned hardware tinkerer Jeri Ellsworth remained open about what the public testing phase might include, but the team's objective is to make PC gaming even more appealing to everyday consumers.

The company recently rolled out a Big Picture Mode designed for use with living room TV screens rather than smaller computer monitors or laptop screens and has previously indicated its interest in wearable computing, digital display glasses, productivity apps, and the incorporation of educational, narrative and scientific techniques within its games.
