afp Relaxnews | 17 February, 2012 13:21

The long-planned adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play 'August: Osage Country' will reach the screen with Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep portraying a daughter and mother.

The adaptation of the play written by Tracy Letts follows the story of two women who have gone in different directions when a family crisis brings them back to their childhood home and their pill-addicted mother.

John Wells (ER, The Company Men), who also produced the Golden Globe winning Mildred Pierce for HBO, will direct the film for the Weinstein Co., the indie studio up for an Oscar with the frontrunner The Artist.

Production expects to start in the fall.

Streep is an Oscar nominee for best actress in The Iron Lady, the story of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and just won the BAFTA, the British equivalent of the Academy Award.

The actress will next be seen in the dramedy Great Hope Springs with Steve Carell (Date Night) and Tommy Lee Jones (Men in Black), out in August in North America.

Roberts will star as the Evil Queen in Mirror Mirror, a comedic retelling of the Snow White fairy tale featuring Lily Collins (The Blind Side) and Armie Hammer (The Social Network), directed by Tarsem Singh (Immortals) and due in theaters late March and early April worldwide.
