Trailer: Ang Lee's 'Life of Pi'
The first trailer for Ang Lee's ‘Life of Pi’ was released online.
The film stars Tobey Maguire ( Spider-Man), Irrfan Khan ( Slumdog Millionaire) and newcomer Suraj Sharma in the lead role.
The adaptation of Yann Martel's best-selling novel by the Oscar-winning director of Brokeback Mountain follows the story of an Indian boy named Pi, a zookeeper's son who is shipwrecked and adrift in a lifeboat with Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger.
The footage doesn't outline the story of the family heading to North America, crossing the ocean on a cargo ship with the menagerie of animals, but does depict the dramatic storm, underwater sinking ship and floating at sea.
Knowledge and cunning allow the 16-year-old boy to survive 227 days at sea. When they land on the Mexican coastline, the Bengal tiger flees to the jungle, and Pi is left to tell his unbelievable tale.
The lyrical trailer relies on stunning imagery to entice viewers into what's described as a visually "vibrant" and "amazing" epic journey, conveying an emotionally inspiring message of hope and courage.
The lyrical look and effects by cinematographer Claudio Miranda ( The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Tron: Legacy) are creating anticipation and comparing the breakthrough 3D experience to James Cameron's Avatar and Martin Scorsese's Hugo.
Life of Pi releases November 21/22 in North America and Hong Kong, following in December in most other locations worldwide, and Australia on January 1.
