The musicians of US pop-punk band Green Day have announced via Twitter that they have begun recording a new album.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong announced the band's return to the studio: "Happy Valentine's day! Officially started recording the new record today. It's F*** Time!!!!"

According to NME, the band previously remarked that its new ninth studio album would "move away from the concepts of their last two records American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown and be more straightforward".

Last November the band debuted the new track Carpe Diem during a live show in San Francisco, California.

Also, last month, Green Day's Grammy winning musical American Idiot added an extra week of performances to its UK tour.

A feature film version of the musical, being produced by Tom Hanks, is currently in the works.

Last year, Green Day released a two-disc set of live recordings titled Awesome As F***, featuring 17 tracks recorded at 16 different locations on the band's 2009 to 2010 world tour.
