Quick review: Gym Class Heros - The Papercut Chronicles II
Travis McCoy and the boys from Gym Class Heroes are back with their fifth studio album and it is by no means a master class product.
The pop-rock/ alternative band just manages to hold my attention for a track or two up to Life Goes On featuring Oh Land. From Solo Discoteque onward it’s all downhill.
McCoy tries, almost desperately it seems to be innovative with his lyricism but everything he’s says has been said before with much more luster.
Aside from the Adam Levine aided smash hit, Stereo Heart the album offers a few good songs but nothing phenomenal.
What was considered edgy creative brilliance years ago is attempted again by McCoy with little effect. On Holy Horsesh*t, Batman! straddles between religion and heresy but fails to thrill the way a Devil In A New Dress by Kanye West does.
Lazarus, Ze Gitan is a tired pop drag where McCoy metaphorically compares the cities to which he’s travelled to fast paced love affairs. Sound familiar? All too familiar, in fact.
This sequel gives mediocre songs for teeny-boppers to listen to but as an album fails to live up to it’s predecessor, The Papercut Chronicles.
The album is no worse that their 2008 effort, The Quilt, but like their last album The Papercut Chronicles II is pedestrian, flat and uninspired.
Gym Class fans might appreciate this album but those who are not familiar with them might want to give it a miss.
