Listen: Cat Power's new single 'Ruin'

Six years since the release of 'The Greatest', her last album of original material, Cat Power has released the new single from her upcoming album.

The album, Sun is due for release on September 3, and the first single Ruin was put online a few days ago.

The four-and-a-half minute track is a more upbeat take on Power's trademark minimalist, bluesy sound. Her voice is still recognisable as ever, gritty, smoky and beautiful. The song's lyrics talk of gypsies and the singer's own travels. Despite the title, the song isn't as dark and sombre as Power's music usually is.

And while the album's title might have one expecting flowers and hippy shakes, the singer admitted in an interview with The Stool Pigeon that Sun is inspired by her breakup from actor Giovanni Ribisi (who is now married to model Agyness Deyn).

"I cut my hair off three days [after the breakup], got on a plane to France and I finished [the album]," Power told the publication. "It's all good, you know. I love the person very much. I actually love this record very much, too. I'm very proud of it."

The last album Power (real name Chan Marshall) released was 2008's Jukebox, a covers album. At the end of last year, Power released a new version of her 1996 track King Rides By. The video featured boxer Manny Pacquiao and was directed by Ribisi.
