Nkalakatha remake ensures status as rugby, bar mitzvah anthem: video

Lebohang Nthongoa | 08 October, 2012 15:07

Gabi Le Roux and Mandoza recently got back into the studio to record the remake of Mandoza's most successful release Nkalakatha.

This time around the song is enhanced with up-to-date effects and new lyrics.

Songs producer Le Roux said: 'The song has been played in the townships, at the rugby, at braais, bar mitzvahs. It's had such massive appeal over the last 12 years. Mandoza and I said 'why don't we do this again ... give it a fresh new feel, pump it up.'

'Before [the song] was owned by a record company, but now we want to take ownership and do anything that we like because the song still exists after 12 years,' said Mandoza.

As a popular anthem among rugby fans, the new version has a few Afrikaans lyrics.

'We're giving it a 2012 feel, but you'll still recognise the baseline ... Mandoza delivered it with a lot more energy,' said Le Roux.
