Album review: Lupe Fiasco - 'Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1'

The famous saying goes: "Once you go wack you never go back". Well, no, I might have tweaked it a bit.

Lupe Fiasco went wack with the contrived commercial crap that was Lasers last year. Whatever had happened to the man who gave us The Cool?

Well, it looks like he’s trying to find his way back and while he’s not quite reached the high standards of his first two albums, Fiasco’s definitely not as shitty as he was in 2011.

The album’s title, Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1 certainly implies this is a rebirth of sorts.

And it’s not going too badly.

Strange Fruition has socially-conscious lyrics over a cool beat while ITAL (Roses) is the most infectious lecture I’ve ever heard (that Lupe Fiasco can be such a dad).

Most of what Fiasco says isn’t anything new, but rather lyrical lectures on how fucked up society is than "Girl I want you to know..."

Other tracks worth mentioning are Bitch Bad (about how bad the word bitch is, rather than about a "bad bitch"), Lamborghini Angels and How Dare You.

Gwen Stefani once said that having a hit song is addictive and it’s a high that artists will strive to hit over and over again.

That explains tracks like Heart Donor (which is really shit) and Battle Scars (which is really, really shit and sounds like something Bruno Mars would cream himself to sing on).

There are some Lasers-like moments, the kind of chart-topping rubbish that cements the record-buying masses have bad taste.

While it’s not an amazing album, Food & Liquor II is certainly a step in the right direction.

Welcome back, Lupe Fiasco. Almost.
