Die Antwoord, Lady Gaga battle it out over NSFW video
Surprise, surprise. South African zef group Die Antwoord have released yet another controversial video for their new single, this time, poking fun at queen of controversy Lady Gaga.
The video for Fatty Boom Boom features Lady Gaga clad in her infamous meat dress touring through the urban jungle of Johannesburg with a local taxi driver giving her a very stereotypical tour of what contains the average foreigner’s concept of South Africa.
The guide, talking about South Africanisms like referring to traffic lights as ‘robots’ and lions and hyenas in the street – every South African’s favourite typecast.
Then comes some street musicians – Die Antwoord – with Gaga saying "Maybe I should get them to open for me": a direct reference to hers and their former record label Interscope's request to have them open for her upcoming South African tour.
Gaga is rumoured to be a fan of Die Antwoord, but the group – made up of Yo-Landi Vi$$er and Ninja – turned the offer down.
Ninja told MTV: "Weird shit's been happening, like fucking Lady Gaga asked us to tour with her and we're like, 'No, don't worry about it.' Our stuff is like fucking hardcore like solid heavyweight! We want it to be like a secret mind-fuck! People are like what the fuck is this the first time they hear it. We like making pop music, but we like making hardcore music at the same time, mixing them, but they've got, like, soul. It's not like weak, superficial shit. You know?"
In true stereotypical South African fashion, Gaga's taxi is hijacked.
Where it goes from there, well, let’s say it involves birthing a Parktown prawn. Let’s leave the gory details out. Needless to say, it isn’t pretty.
Warning: This video is not safe for work.
Now on her Facebook page, Gaga has responded to the video, writing a post referring to one of their latest singles I Fink U Freeky and alluding to her upcoming tour in South Africa:
"i fink u freaky but you don't have a hit. hundred thousand tIckets sold in SA. #thatmyshit
"i guess its not a good idea to tell someone you're a fan. never mind! we get it, you're not a little monster. WE GOT IT."
Gaga’s comment received mixed reactions with many saying Die Antwoord are cool and she must get over herself, while some say the video is in bad taste and is sour grapes.
Die Antwoord responded on Facebook with a post that read: "lady... even tho u r 'larger' than us... we still cooler than u... plus we don't have prawns in our private parts... haha!"
The responses have been largely positive with fans picking up on the groups ‘Prawn Star’ adverts, targeting Gaga with the insult.
Who wins the battle of the outlandish? Watch the video and decide for yourself.
