Technology company Apple has announced the launch of the iTunes Store in South Africa, among other countries.

The other countries included in this new launch are Russia, Turkey, India, and 52 others.

Local artist include the likes of Toya Delazy, 2012's Idols winner Khaya Mthetwa and Zahara.

The iTunes Store, known for featuring wide selections of music from all the major labels and thousands of independent labels, will now feature local artists among international ones, and is available to iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac and PC users.

The service, previously not available in South Africa, had to be accessed via international addresses. Some users listed their details with relatives or friends overseas, while buying iTunes vouchers online in order to buy music.

With the local launch, South African users will be able to download music without having to piggyback on friends and family.

One of the issues that people have with iTunes is digital rights management (DRM) - access control technology designed to limit the use of digital content and devices after sale. That meant iTunes music could be used on iTunes only. Now all music on the iTunes Store comes in iTunes Plus, Apple’s DRM-free format. Apple says is virtually indistinguishable from the original recordings.

iTunes in the Cloud is also available, and lets users download previously purchased iTunes music to all their iOS devices at no additional cost. New music purchases can be downloaded automatically to all devices. Music not purchased from the iTunes Store can be stored in iCloud for access at any time from any iOS device via iTunes Match, which has to be purchased.

Customers also have access to the App Store.

Apple says all iTunes Store purchases require a valid credit card with a billing address in country.

Movie fans will have to wait, though, as the service is not yet available locally.

The highly-anticipated iPhone 5 will be available locally too on December 14.
