Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl praises Meg White's drumming style

Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl has defended the much criticised talents of Meg White, praising her drumming with The White Stripes.

White's simplistic style of playing has often led to criticism in the past, however, Grohl states that she is one of the best of all time, and that he holds her in the same esteem as iconic drummers such as Keith Moon and John Bonham, according to NME.

Speaking to Rolling Stone about his new movie Sound City and the way the film tackles the issue of digital versus analogue in modern production, Grohl said that modern day drumming has lost its personality and that he enjoys listening to drummers who may not be technically proficient but have made great music nonetheless.

"You listen to John Bonham, and his feel was not metronomic, but it was legendary. Keith Moon played like he was on fire. He was a wild drummer. He was sloppy and he was fuckin' frenetic and manic, but that's The Who. Stewart Copeland, his tempo would fuckin' blast off like the space shuttle, but that's The Police," Grohl said.

"Nowadays, I think it could be hard for a kid to find a favourite drummer, because a lot of that personality is being robbed from these musicians for the sake of perfection, and it's kind of a drag.

“It's nice to hear drummers like Meg White – one of my favorite fucking drummers of all time. Like, nobody fucking plays the drums like that. Or the guy from The Black Keys. Watch that guy play the drums – it's crazy.

“The dude from Vampire Weekend. Like, if any of those people went to the Berklee School of Music they'd never be accepted, because they're not considered technically proficient. But their music has totally changed the world."

Meanwhile, Grohl recently spoke out about reuniting with his Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic and working with Paul McCartney as well as his plans for a new Foo Fighters album.

Unlike her bandmate and ex-husband Jack White, Meg has not pursued any musical ventures since the end of The White Stripes.

The band officially split in 2011.

Jack is vocalist and guitarist for The Raconteurs and drummer of The Dead Weather. He recently released a solo album Blunderbuss.
