Hip hop Pantsula

As I write this review, Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP, Double HP, for those who don't know) is in the US for the Artist-in-Bloom fellowship.

His video Make Monyeke - where he mimics the flashmob trend - is on high rotation on MTV Base.

HHP is South Africa's Jay-Z. You know what I mean, he possesses that ability to be commercial and yet still have street-cred with the underground crews.

Dumela is a double album that anyone who loves this rapper's music should own. The name of the album means "Hello" in Setswana but, more appropriately, it also means "Believe". And believing is something I imagine he's had to do a lot of in the last couple of months.

After wonderfully declaring in Love of My Liewe (which can be found on the so hot it's bananas album YB2NW), he found his private life all over the tabloids last year when he broke up with his girlfriend and the mother of his child. All that "strife" is expressed in Mmago Rrago (featuring Supa and Morafe's KG), where he talks about what led to the break up.

But that's not the only thing that had Jabba in the papers. Before the album dropped, there was talk that he paid US rapper Nas a hefty amount to feature in the song Keledimo. People wanted to know why pay for a guest appearance? Will it be worth it? And to those people, I say: Yes, it bloody well is. Nas and HHP have great chemistry in this track that highlights everything from social segregation to putting people on pedestals.

I could give you a thousand and one reasons why you should get this album, why HHP continues to be the only rapper that everyone can listen to (my mom owns a copy of his first album, Omang), I could tell you he's a gifted, inspiring rapper. But there's really only one reason why you should respect this man: He's The Shit.
