Playful series hits the 'J' spot
Nox, Noma, Amira and Danny are four gorgeous, 30-something professionals living it up and looking for love in the city. Sound familiar?
The city here, however, is Joburg and the issues dealt with have a certain South African flavour.
As much as it might offer a flippant look at modern-day morals, tastes and sexual mores, 4Play: Sex Tips for Girls was commissioned by USAid-funded NGO Johns Hopkins Health and Education in South Africa and it takes the opportunity to send out a message about living responsibly, something Sex and the City never really did.
But, though the title's add-on, "Sex tips for Girls", might imply a documentary of sorts, this is a show that puts entertainment first. It is slick and stylish, funny and risque. The dialogue is pacy and colloquial and pulls no punches.
In the first episode, we are introduced to the main characters, who regularly meet up at Noma's hair and beauty salon, that ultimate of feminine hubs. As Noma (Portia Gumede) says: "When I work in the salon, I hear all the stories. Genuine, I could write a book."
Noma is a single mother and entrepreneur who believes she is beyond love and sex.
She's the shoulder everyone cries on. Whether it is Nox (Kgomotso Christopher) worrying about her distant husband, Brian; Amira (Mbali Maphumulo) who once again believes the man she has just met is the one; or Danny (Tiffany Jones), the demanding image consultant dealing with her diva clients' latest emergencies, Noma gets it all in the ear.
"There are three million people in this city and it's amazing anyone gets any work done," she says, exasperated. "All they do is have sex, talk about sex or think about who they are going to have sex with next."
4Play: Sex Tips for Girls promises to tell it like it is and I have a feeling that we are not going to be disappointed.
- 4Play: Sex Tips for Girls premieres on e.tv at 9pm.
