Looking at her, you would be forgiven for thinking that she just walked off the set of a 1940s movie.

Her signature look is marked by her ebony black hair, blood red lips, a pale yet refreshed appearance and the distinct beauty spot below her left eye.

Dita von Teese is an American burlesque artist and the focus of today's E! True Hollywood Special.

Through exclusive interviews with those closest to Von Teese, the show will offer an insider's perspective on all the ups and downs in the life of this legendary entertainer.

The documentary unwraps everything from her foray into the fetish world, her doomed marriage to shock rocker Marilyn Manson and her meteoric rise to fame. Von Teese has secured her spot as one of the most influential fashion icons of our time.

Her mother was a fan of old, golden-era Hollywood films, and it was from her that Von Teese developed a fascination with the actresses of the day, especially Betty Grable and Audrey Hepburn. Though trained as a ballerina, Von Teese went on to study historic costuming, and aspired to work as a stylist for films. She is a trained costume designer, often designing the photo-shoots herself.

Though a model and designer in her own right, it was her brief marriage to Manson that gained her fame and recognition. Von Teese filed for divorce in 2006, a year after they were married, citing irreconcilable differences.

Always elegantly dressed in her 1940s-inspired best, Von Teese still manages to hold her own on the red carpet, and in some cases outshines other celebs clad in more modern attire.

The Emmy Award-nominated E! True Hollywood Story is a series of one-and two-hour docu-dramas chronicling the lives of some of entertainment's most celebrated people, places and events.

The programme provides an insider's view of Hollywood, putting the star-making machine under a microscope with each episode.
