Life on a Plate: Heather Clark

Food Weekly | 27 November, 2011 21:30

What did you eat last night?

A seafood mix of crab sticks, calamari rings and tentacles, prawns and mussels. It all comes in a bag and I fried it up in garlic butter. It was my first attempt at this and it worked out very well.

The best meal you've ever eaten?

A couple of weeks ago, a friend served a wonderful tuna fillet that he had caught himself. He rolled it in spices and seared it in a pan. It was the best thing I've ever tasted.

The very first thing you ever cooked?

Bacon and eggs when I was about 14. I was spoilt, my mom always cooked for me. I still have a small repertoire but I don't starve.

What food makes you think of holidays?

Seafood makes me think of holidays in Mozambique. Fast food reminds me of American trips and baked goodies make me remember times spent in France.

What's always in your fridge?

Eggs. I have eggs with everything. If I come home late, it's scrambled egg. In the morning it's a fried or boiled egg. I eat so many eggs I should keep chickens.

Your favourite cookbook?

I have six cookbooks and have never cooked anything out of any of them. If I need a recipe, I phone my mom and she gives me a recipe off the top of her head. My mom is my favourite cookbook.

Do you have a favourite TV chef?

I enjoy Jamie Oliver because he never measures anything.

Your favourite food indulgence?

Malva pudding with ice cream and cream.

Your favourite tipple?

Spiced Gold and Coke. I go with the Captain.

Favourite after-surf snack?

A bacon-and-egg sandwich or an omelette.

What won't make it past your lips?

Anchovies.

Who would be at your dream dinner party?

Robbie Williams, Pink, the Kardashians, and possibly one or two of the pro surfers I travel with. That should be an interesting mix.

Heather Clark is one of South Africa's best female surfers. She won the World Masters Surf Championship twice and the South African Surfing Championship a record eight times. She is the only South African to have won the prestigious Triple Crown of Surfing in Hawaii
