Were JZ tapes made up? iLIVE

Two months before the 2009 general elections, the then acting head of the National Prosecutions Authority, Mokotedi Mpshe, announced to the nation that it had decided to withdraw corruption charges against ANC president Jacob Zuma because recordings between former and current senior prosecutions officials compromised the case ("Hunt for Zuma tapes", yesterday).

Isn't strange that the [former] Special Investigating Unit boss, Willie Hofmeyr, who was part of the team that decided on the matter, is still looking for the tapes, transcripts or even copies of the conversations?

We were told the NPA officials had first heard of the tape from Zuma's legal representative, Michael Hulley. Based on the content of the tapes, they had decided to withdraw the charges.

One would have thought they made their decision to drop charges based on evidence in their possession, but it turns out they do not have the tapes.

This was an important case for South Africa and the least the NPA could have done was to release the audio for the nation to hear for itself.

As things stand, one is beginning to doubt whether the tapes ever existed.

Did the NPA make up the tapes to pave the way for Zuma?

I've been wondering that myself. With this government nothing would surprise me. Lying is part and parcel of their motto.
