How to grade children and reward their teachers

Ken Stacey, Cinda Park | 27 January, 2012 00:18

The school year has again stuttered into motion with the usual problems with registration, infrastructure and teachers on strike. No one seems to take responsibility.

Schools go on producing another batch of undereducated and ill-prepared youngsters for the (currently non-existent) job market. There is a simple solution: motivation and incentives. What is required is a curriculum with a core that is based on the 3Rs, plus a narrow selection of secondary subjects.

Matriculation is the key to qualification:

  • Less than 40% = failure, so re-educate;
  • 41% - 50% = unskilled, go for closely supervised work;
  • 51% - 60% = unskilled, go for

supervised work;

  • 61% - 70% = qualified to apply for apprenticeship training;
  • 71% - 80% = qualified to apply for technical training and a later diploma or degree; and
  • 80%+ = qualified to apply for entrance to university, leading to professional status.

Teachers' basic salary plus pay based on last year's class performance should be determined by the school board. This might raise eyebrows, but the principle is simple and will work. Pupils will know where they are going and potential employers will know what to expect and set requirements and training accordingly.
