Transformation of sport needs acceleration: iLIVE

Lwazi Nkolonzi, Johannesburg | 27 January, 2012 00:18

Media reports that the Minister of Sport and recreation, Fikile Mbalula, is pushing for transformation of sport in the country, especially cricket and rugby, is encouraging .

I've always been dismayed at how the developmental pace of these two sporting codes has been very slow in unearthing talent from disadvantaged communities .

One just has to look at the national teams of these two codes to conclude that transformation has been slow.

The national cricket team has over the years failed to produce players from disadvantaged communities.

Makhaya Ntini was the only player for many years in the national set-up from a rural community and Cricket SA failed to build on that foundation. Part of the reasons they have failed is what we are currently seeing with the inquiry into Cricket SA finances. If Mbalula wants to speed up the transformation of sport, he will have to start with transforming the set-up in terms of the administrators of the games and have people who are transformation-driven and are working towards the development of these sporting codes. This should not take the inclusion of a few players of colour in the national set-up to measure that pace. A concrete plan of developing the codes in disadvantaged communities and transformation plans must be put in place.
