Rent victory applauded: iLIVE
I applaud Gauteng Infrastructure Development MEC Bheki Nkosi for his crackdown on public servants represented by Popcru who occupy government property at grossly discounted rates ("Popcru loses rent battle", February 3).
It is high time we tackle public servants who abuse the system, some of whom pay as little as R200 for rentals.
This court judgment will pave the way for the government to evict public servants who have benefited unjustly at taxpayers' expense.
I must also applaud the Labour Court, which not only passed this precedent-setting judgment, but also ordered that the application was dismissed with costs. This will act as a stern warning to others who wish to test the government and the law without proper cause.
The MEC's commitment to closing loopholes is demonstrated by his department's court application to secure an order to implement market- appropriate rentals.
This would dissuade future attempts to prevent the department from fulfilling its mandate.
