SA should be wary of overconfidence in the decision to site the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope here.
The Australian bid probably has more going for it as the area they have chosen has zero habitation and is not considered an area of natural beauty. From a purely green perspective the WA site must have less impact.
Furthermore Australia has a far better communications infrastructure with the country currently implementing a very high speed data network that Telkom could never match.
Lastly there is the question of cost.
Australia is a rich country which does not have the socio-economic problems of South Africa. Large sums of money here would be better employed solving some of these problems.
