Make tolls affordable: iLIVE
While I am opposed to e-tolling in principle, it seems the authorities are absolutely determined to impose it.
I have a suggestion, which I'm sure they won't accept, but which could ease the pain for everyone.
Why not charge R1 or so for every transit under a gantry, irrespective of the distance or the type of vehicle involved?
I believe this would be much easier to administer than the complicated distance- and weight-based scheme.
It would motivate users to install e-tags as it would be cheaper than the cost based on the current proposal. That in turn would encourage motorists to use toll roads much more than they are likely to do under the proposed pricing scheme.
As a result, the increased traffic would result in greater revenue for Sanral and would help in paying off the loan.
It would also reduce or eliminate the heavy wear that is certain to occur on alternative routes that motorists will find to avoid punitive and unaffordable costs.
