A legacy we do not want: iLIVE
In the UK, Australia and the US, special units are created within the police, prosecution and justice departments for special victims of crime.
This has helped the criminal justice system in those countries to deal with victims such as disabled children and other vulnerable victims of crime, including foreign nationals and the elderly.
South Africa needs to take this approach.
We need to invest more in our youth.
We also need to remind people that anyone who rapes a person with mental disabilities or a child will be placed on the national register of sex offenders.
If this doesn't act as a deterrent, the rapists should know their names will be remembered as the worst abusers of human rights.
We do not want this legacy.
We must condemn ourselves because those young men are part of who we are as a nation.
I will continue to be committed to educating communities about their rights.
