There is no hope for our country: iLIVE

Marianna Marques | 22 May, 2012 10:39
Five-year-old Itumeleng Khutlane carries her brother, Teboho, with her sister Reabetsoe following them, at the Randfontein municipal landfill, west of Johannesburg. The children's parents gave permission for their names to be used

A damning United Nations report has highlighted horrific conditions under which many of South Africa's children are forced to live.

I have just read the above mentioned report with great sadness and yet with an avalanche of anger.

If government could set an example to all its people, and lead with a fair and just rule, things may be better. But whilst you have people who get put into positions and abuse them knowing that they will get away with it, nothing will change the poverty of our children.

I just think of the e-toll saga. How many schools could have been built, children fed and elderly people looked after with dignity instead?

While we allow government to do as they please, we the normal taxpayer will be expected to take "responsibility and help the underprivileged" whilst the members of government, their families and friends are just taking.

And then to add fuel to fire, our borders are open to all and sundry.

Drugs have become the order of the day. Our children become drug users to dealers to prostitutes to thugs all because of no true responsibility from government. They also took our rights as parents away from us and the right to our children to be taught Christian values at school. The counter argument to this would be to say we all have a choice to be who we are. But how can a child make these choices without parents? And how do they survive without money, food etc?

Education is key to our children's future, but we cannot even offer proper schooling to our children.

We are a disgrace to other nations, we are a joke to our own society, and we need the UN to highlight the plight of our future generations.

God help us.
