Spear is historical symbol for Africa: iLIVE

Philani Zulu, by e-mail | 24 May, 2012 00:18

I am disheartened when the spear is compared to genitals.

The spear is a symbol of liberation of the African people from the yolk of colonialism, imperialism and apartheid.

As Africans, the spear was our first symbol of resistance to colonialism. Impi YaseSandlwana (the battle of iSandlwana) in 1879 bears testimony to this when the Zulus defeated the British artillery - the worst humiliation suffered by the British on African soil.

When the ANC was formed as the first liberation movement in the whole of Africa, it adopted the spear as a symbol of resistance, and it appears on the ANC's logo.

The ANC formed Umkhonto we Sizwe in acknowledgement of the fallen heroes, finally liberating the country with modern weapons.

The spear has always been a significant part of our struggle as African people and should be valued as such.
