More to be angry about than 'Spear': iLIVE

Ron Legg, Hillcrest | 28 May, 2012 00:12

President Jacob Zuma's supporters have been protesting over the painting, The Spear because it is perceived as being disrespectful to his dignity.

What is of concern is not the emotion generated over this matter - it is the fact that the same enthusiasm is not shown when it comes to corruption.

Far more damage is done to the dignity of millions of people who are deprived of basic services as a result of the actions of corrupt officials and politicians.

It has been estimated about R30-billion a year is lost through corruption. It is an insult to the poor . Most of the money is siphoned off by corrupt individuals, public servants and politicians .

The needs of South Africans would be better served if the same pressure directed towards the artist and his painting was placed on the ANC to get rid of crooks.

Protesters should take to the streets with banners showing anger at corruption because eradicating it will help significantly to bring about a "better life for all".

Why does the ANC lackaction over corruption?

Perhaps it is easier to protest over a painting because too many well-placed people are enjoying the benefits of corruption.
