ANCYL weak and rudderless: iLIVE

Thabile Mange, by e-mail | 02 July, 2012 23:58
POPULIST JULIUS MALEMA

Julius Malema's tenure was full of controversy ("Juju speaks from wilderness", yesterday).

He was a power-monger and populist who was concerned with enriching himself rather than addressing matters that affected the youth.

Ronald Lamola seems to be struggling to take the organisation forward.

Instead, he's trying to mimic the former president by making reckless statements.

Has he not learned anything from Malema's experience of speaking out of turn?

It is unfortunate that the league has allowed itself to be used by its seniors. They are caught up in the power struggle between President Jacob Zuma and his deputy, Kgalema Motlanthe. Their obsession with removing president Zuma from power must stop. Their focus should be on rebuilding their organisation.

The youth league is currently visionless, rudderless and weak, thanks to Malema.

During the recent ANC policy conference, the league appeared to have had minimal influence and its silence was deafening.

We need a strong league that will help address issues, such as high youth unemployment and lack of access to higher learning institutions, that affect the country's youth.
