Better uses for stadium: iLIVE

Heidi Davies | 04 July, 2012 00:11
The Cape Town stadium. File photo.

Turn the stadium into Cape Town's tourism hub ("Stadium not suitable for low-cost housing", yesterday).

Create shops and restaurants that trade in all things South African.

Have micro-breweries and host wine-tasting events. Create theatres to stage ongoing shows and host the many talents we have in our country.

Provide a platform for South African art to be showcased, and allow people to givelessons in Ndebele beadwork and drumming sessions.

Create lecture rooms where people can learn about the country . Host cooking classes and teach tourists how to make koeksisters, boerewors and Cape Malay food.

Can you imagine the fun tourists would have if they learned to do the gum boot dance or to sing the click song or Sarie Marais?

You could create a park where the field is, where people could play mini-golf , and there could be a braai area . Allow informal traders to sell curios .

T hink of the many jobs that could be created.

This is a better option than low-cost housing, which would soon be an eyesore.
