Time wasted on studies: iLIVE

I find Professor Jonathan Jansen's comments on the subject of community service interesting ("This is service overkill", July 15).
My son has his own story to tell. He obtained a BA degree in media, culture and communications and had distinctions throughout his university career, but couldn't get a job.
So, he went back to the technikon section of the institution to do a diploma in electrical engineering.
He completed all his courses and projects in the required time with good marks. Then came the time when he was required to perform a year's practical in-service training - and therein lay the rub. Very few such positions - in effect community service - are available for whites.
I have it on good authority from spouses of people who do the hiring of trainees in such positions that they have been instructed not to even look at non-equity CVs.
My son now makes sweets at a local confectionery.
The time that has been spent on his diploma is a waste because he cannot graduate.
Community service? Don't make me laugh. First you've got to find someone who actually wants you.
