S'THEMBISO Msomi's column, "Motlanthe a closed book" (July 25), makes for unfortunate reading.

Kgalema Motlanthe's answers on whether he is ready to take on President Jacob Zuma in Mangaung have been quoted extensively. Motlanthe is a disciplined ANC member who is sticking to the party's rules on the leadership debate.

Whether Motlanthe is ready to run for president is neither here nor there at this stage.

Why must he declare his ambitions before the nominations start, and embark on a divisive campaign?

Msomi believes Motlanthe should state his ambitions now.

Actually, it would be career suicide for Motlanthe to throw caution to the wind.
