Madonsela debate distracts attention from real issues: iLIVE

The debate about Thuli Madonsela's participation in the DA Women's Day event in Port Elizabeth is a welcome diversion for the ANC.

These celebrations should not be about politics. They should be about women's rights, rights that are much talked about and legislated, but which in practice are not respected. Our terrible rape statistics, which under the ANC government have increased, and the violence dished out on women daily, should be the subject of discussion. It should not be about having a good time. We try to solve our problems of violence with pamphlets and money, but with little success.

As a nation we have to become more inventive to solve this scourge by looking at the causes.

For far too long our justice system has been too lenient when it comes to punishing the perpetrators of crimes against women.
