Lonmin an unwitting victim: iLIVE

Tony Ball, Durban | 23 August, 2012 00:11
BLEAK FUTURE: A girl plays at the informal settlement near the Marikana mine in North West. The massacre there is the kind of reality that Trevor Manuel's National Development Plan does not acknowledge or address Picture: ANTONIO MUCHAVE

It is all very well expecting Lonmin to be at a standstill "out of respect" for the shot miners but the costs of operating the mine continue regardless of whether there is production.

Lonmin is an unwitting victim of police action and this will cost it millions.

If this situation is allowed to continue the mine will close down permanently.

There are reports that rock-drill operators actually earn more than the so-called R4500 a month. Perhaps a reporter could investigate the matter and get the facts out.

Perhaps clear heads can prevail to defuse the situation.
