Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet said the government needs to find ways to curb the migrant labour system, and to improve the economic situation of those living in the Eastern Cape ("Shock as death toll is revised up", August 24) .

Unfortunately, Kiviet has made the wrong diagnosis.

Workers from the Eastern Cape should have access to every mine in South Africa. What is required is a revolution in the regulatory architecture of mining.

Mining should serve the interests of economic freedom, not just the black elite and monopoly capitalism.

Miners and their communities deserve better wages, housing, healthcare and education.

As the ANC says: "A better life for all." -
