Running for Madiba and other freedom fighters: iLIVE
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize yesterday(26/08) led a strong team of MECs and political leaders who took part in the inaugural Nelson Mandela Marathon which pays tribute to the contributions of former President Nelson Mandela and other freedom fighters to the liberation of this country.
Dr Mkhize, first lady Dr May Mkhize, Finance MEC Ina Cronje, Cooperative Governance MEC Nomsa Dube were among participants in the 4.66 kilometres walk while others ran a 10 kilometre race and a 42 kilometre marathon.
The Marathon started at the Manayi Hall in Imbali - where Mandela gave his last speech before his arrest – to the Nelson Mandela Museum in Tweedy, which is next to the where Mandela was captured by police in a roadblock.
“This marathon is a very good initiative toward all our endeavors of preserving the contributions of all those who fought for our liberation like President Mandela,” said Dr Mkhize.
He said this marathon is a good platform to bring people around the Nelson Mandela Capture site and the museum which was recently opened.
