Spend on notes is suspect, wasteful: iLIVE
New bank notes featuring Nelson Mandela, an icon of the world, are long overdue.
While most South Africans would welcome the new notes, it is an insult to Mandela and all South Africans that the governor deems it necessary to spend R32-million to make the public familiar with the notes, especially in light of high unemployment and poverty.
The public will not reject the new notes when they receive them at ATMs, banks and shops. Advertising maybe necessary only to make the blind aware of the changes.
South Africans, especially the oppressed, did not reject nor destroy notes during apartheid when they bore their heads of their oppressors.
I suspect the "awareness campaign" is linked to a company that is connected to politicians or the Reserve Bank.
