The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal condemns in the strongest possible terms the brutal and senseless attack on our three comrades at Welbedacht, outside Durban on Wednesday night.

Mthembeni Shezi (also known as Msizeni Ximba), Ward 72 councillor and ANC branch chairperson, Sbu Mpanza, branch deputy chairperson and Bulelani Mjoli, a ward committee member were sprayed with a hail of bullets by unknown attackers during an ANC meeting around 6pm. They are currently in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

“The ANC leadership and the entire membership are deeply shocked by this despicable attack. We condemn it and we urge our law enforcement agencies to work tirelessly to bring those responsible for the attack to justice,” said ANC spokesperson, Senzo Mkhize.

According to police reports, the motive for the attack is unknown. The ANC however has noted with grave concern the continuous killing of its leaders in KwaZulu-Natal.

“The ANC deeply condemns these killings which seem to be well organized. We also appeal to our members and the community to assist the police in tracking down the people who are involved in these barbaric acts,” said Mkhize

Yesterday’s attack happened barely a month after our comrades, Dumisani Malunga and Bheki Chiliza, the chairperson and branch secretary of the ANC Oshabeni branch on the South Coast were killed.
