Mitt the Twit, giving arch-rival US President Barack Obama a first-round knock-out, is the type of pre-election debate so absent in our election run-ups. Because of a few gaffes, Romney sent an erudite and well-groomed debater for a serious rethink before the second round starts.

Come January, there might be a new occupant in the White House - and another round of post-9/11 Republican war talk, with Iran a hot topic.
