Masses will judge ANC: iLIVE

Ceduma Nocubhe, Cape Town | 12 October, 2012 00:13

A Bback-room "deal" to stave off a bruising battle before the ANC conference in December is said to have the backing of party veterans ("ANC leadership deal on the cards", October 9). ANC branches should take political responsibility for the destiny of the party.

Organisational renewal is about leadership renewal, otherwise why do you fix what is not broken? The propensity of Jacob Zuma to make irrational decisions is untenable in a constitutional democracy. Surely all reasonable people will agree that the answer is not revisiting the balance of power that is entrenched in the constitution. ANC branches must be alive to the reality that post-Mangaung, it cannot be business as usual.

Electoral trends are an important factor in the internal balance of forces. Accordingly, whims of individuals should be subordinated to what is good for the electorate and the country. Failure to act honestly and decisively on the part of ANC branches will be harshly judged by the angry masses.

The ANC should marshal the courage of the seminal Morogoro conference of 1969 and deliver ethical and credible leadership.

South Africa deserves no less.
