As expected, Gordon Igesund dropped talented Andile Jali from the squad that will participate in the Africa Cup of Nations. South Africa has a strange coach, one who favours mediocrity over talent. What does Dean Furman offer that Jali does not?

Talented players such as Teko Modise, Sifiso Mnyeni, Daine Klate were not selected despite their obvious skill.

If the team was selected on merit, why is Thulani Serero in it?

He has not been playing competitively for Dutch club Ajax because of injury, he gets a place ahead of players who have done duty on the pitch week in and week out.

It seems that once a player has two or three good games he is selected to the squad.

Senzo Meyiwa is an example of this.

A candidate for the national side needs to perform well consistently in a number of games but Rowen Williams, of Supersport United, who has done just this, was never considered.

With Igesund at the helm, Bafana is doomed to fail.
