Last Thursday's column by Jonathan Jansen is a wake-up call for all of us.

When a student "with good marks" has to go through such a mission to try to gain entrance to university we must know there is something wrong with the system. It must be changed. It doesn't require a rocket scientist to make those changes, just politicians with the guts and the interests of the country at heart.

Then 190 South African medical students are on a hunger strike in Cuba demanding a bigger monthly stipend. They are the chosen few. They get free admission to university, free board and lodging and $200 spending money a month. But they don't like the food. They want $700 a month or they threaten to return home without completing their studies.

It seems "entitlement" expectations differ substantially among our people. This will bring down local government and cause unrest and grief unless someone in government takes a stand.
