Former intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils has renewed my hope for South Africa (Letters, yesterday).

He confirmed that today's South Africa was not what was intended. He confirmed that old apartheid laws should have been terminated.

Use of the National Key Points Act is a perfect example of the similarity of the ANC of today to the criminal apartheid regime.

Another is the police - just as brutal and as distrusted as during apartheid.

The only difference is that during apartheid such brutality was legal (only later proved criminal).

Today - although it is against the law - police brutality is seen as okay, with the help of magistrates, the prosecution and defence.
