Mandelas should quit feud: iLIVE

Nelson Mandela's grandson, Ndaba Mandela, third from left, granddaughter, Ndileka Mandela, Mandela's daughter Zenani and Public Service Minister Lindiwe Sisulu arrive at Mthatha Airport yesterday morning on their way to the Mandela home in Qunu

I read with such pity - and yet I understand - about the Mandela family feud ("Mandla to press on with exhumations fight", July 1).

I can relate, having been in a similar situation. I opted out. As outsiders, we speculate, especially about which family member we think would like to benefit the most from Neslon Mandela's name and legacy. Since not all of them will benefit directly when he dies, here are survival tips:

  • Remember that the Mandela name cannot just be used for financial gain, now and/or in the future;
  • The Mandela name can be used for the greater good, not only in South Africa but also globally. You can leave the feud and begin today;
  • The people of South Africa are with you. This is another opportunity so build on it. The legacy of your father/ grandfather/great-grandfather, if used properly can look after you, fund charity, social development and education; and
  • The direct beneficiaries of this great man are his wife and children. They lost his fatherhood and they shouldn't lose the benefits or their inheritance. It is their right.

Everyone else is on the periphery, but will not lose out entirely.

Abide by these tips and the rest will look after itself. - CM, Johannesburg

MY QUESTION is this: is Nelson Mandela being denied the right to die with dignity because of this dispute, and is he being kept alive until it has been resolved in the courts?

If this is the case, why did the family wait so long to resolve the dispute? It would appear Mandela has been left to lie "in limbo" pending the outcome of the court case.

Isn't this the ultimate disrespect for the man's dignity? - Grace M, by e-mail
