If it is true that Dr Mamphela Ramphele is planning to launch a new political party, I hope she is focused on the one critical question that makes or breaks any new enterprise: Why?

The ANC had a definite reason for existence when it was launched: representing the aspirations of the disenfranchised majority with the long-term aim of achieving full democracy.

Once democracy was achieved, the other goal has progressively been abandoned, and the ANC has become a party of plutocrats.

COPE split from the ANC for the wrong reasons: personality clashes and power struggles.

It has failed to create a sense of why you'd vote for it, other than wanting something like the ANC with different leadership.

The DA, too, is really a party of anything-but-ANC.

Ramphele, be sure you have clear in your mind the answer to "why", and don't forget your purpose.

Get that right, and I give you a good chance of making it. - Philip Machanick, Grahamstown

IMAGINE Dr Mamphela Ramphele and the DA's Helen Zille and Patricia de Lille - whose fight for transparency in the arms deal is nothing but inspirational - putting their heads together for the good of South Africa.

Is a triumvirate of women who can make a difference out of the question?

Obviously, each would have to make some sacrifices, but if they could work it out, we might have another "miracle" to go with our peaceful transition. - Adele, by e-mail
