The Swan Thieves - Elizabeth Kostova

Kim Bell for Longevity magazine | 31 August, 2010 11:550 Comments

This beautifully crafted story explores the passion of French Impressionism that manifests into visual obsession, the centre of which is tormented painter Robert Oliver.

One seemingly normal day, Oliver attacks a painting hanging on display in the National Gallery. As his silence manifests, he is committed and put into the care of psychiatrist and fellow artist – the narrator of the story – Andrew Marlow.

Marlow questions why Oliver was drawn to the particular painting, and what it is about the painting that locks Oliver into his silent world. His search leads him to the women Oliver has loved, including one who holds the key – and has quite possibly been dead for more than a century. (Littlebrown)
