Clothes horses at the J&B Met

Refilwe Boikanyo | 02 February, 2012 00:14

Refilwe Boikanyo went on patrol with fashion police: Elle's fashion editor Asanda Sizani, blogger Mika Stefano and iFashion editor Emma Jordan

BEST DRESSED

SABC PR MANAGER ZANDILE NKONYENI IN SYLVESTER FALATA

Asanda Sizani says: "It's a pretty, romantic look with a touch of vintage, and she can wear it again to other functions.

"She looks sophisticated and comfortable and she is not trying too hard."

Mika Stefano: "Loved the hat. Sometimes simplicity is the best option."

Emma Jordan: "Zandile has taken the idea of race glamour and given it a modern injection.

"I love the nude top - it looks cool and effortless. I especially love that its neatly cut T is balanced by the ruffled skirt.

"In a weird sort of way, I get that this could be a Calvin Klein/Rodarte marriage.

"I'm not quite sure about the hat, but I get what she's doing: her own version of My Fair Lady."

LEANNE KISTEN DLAMINI, WINNER OF THE BEST R&B/NEO-SOUL ALBUM AT THE 2011 SAMA AWARDS, IN A VINTAGE DRESS FOUND AT REMINISCE IN MELVILLE, JOHANNESBURG

Asanda Sizani: "An elegant, embellished dress, cute shoes, but nothing edgy here. The hemline is also much too demure for an occasion that calls for drama."

Mika Stefano: "Beads and glitter, what more could we want from South Africa's biggest R&B star."

Emma Jordan: "Gorgeous. She took this year's J&B Met's theme Made Different and instead of going over the top with ill-fitting beaded nonsense, it looks like she trawled the vintage shops.

"She's belted what could be your granny's tunic to give it definition.

"By keeping her hair and make-up unfussy, she has let the beadwork speak for itself."

WORST DRESSED

SOCIALITE AND ENTREPRENEUR UYANDA MBULI IN JJ SCHOEMAN

Asanda Sizani says: "Too many elements - not one of her finest moments. I applaud her for doing a print and metallics instead of her expected jewel tones."

Mika Stefano: "It looked as if Uyanda lost a fight with a pack of Ferrero Rocher."

Emma Jordan:"I'm not sure if she's grabbed the last bit of Christmas wrapping paper or done a Gone With The Wind with a plastic table cloth.

"And what about the bits of gold netting? Were they glued on as she raced out the door? From that hideous pink lipstick to the yellow nails and cheap studded cuff, it's just all wrong."

YFM TWINS NTANDO AND HLELO MASINA IN OUTFITS THEY DESIGNED AND COMMISSIONED SYLVESTER FALATA TO MAKE

Asanda Sizani: "I hope they can make better choices next time."

Mika Stefano: "I think a Britney Spears music video was the inspiration."

Emma Jordan: "The YFM girls look like Ferrari girls - pit-side posers. It's not fashion. It's not what you should wear to a racecourse at the height of summer. But as a statement, a look, it's quite funny and there is something I rather like about it. It's so J&B Met."

AVANT-GARDE

TV AND RADIO PERSONALITY BONANG MATHEBA IN GERT JOHAN COETZEE

Asanda Sizani says: "Although exposed midriffs are a trend, the accessories and design could have been more modern and innovative. I like the zig-zag print."

Mika Stefano: "I loved the paper hat that matched the pattern in the skirt but I would have teamed it up with different heels."

Emma Jordan: "I wish she was wearing better shoes. Despite the practicality of leather [or plastic?] on one of the hottest days of the year being questionable, Bonang is on trend with her midriff-baring, cropped bustier.

"It's daring, but not outrageous, with a whiff of Rihanna. You go, girl."

TV PERSONALITY AND FORMER MISS SOUTH AFRICA JO-ANN STRAUSS IN STEFANIA MORLAND

Asanda Sizani: "A playful dress in an optimistic tangerine hue, but her bag and headpiece didn't quite do this whimsical Stefania Morland dress justice."

Mika Stefano: "Tutus are so last season. However, Jo-Ann made the tutu look as trendy as the open bar. She towered over the normal people."

Emma Jordan: "What were you thinking? Fun? Fun is for Sundays, in your home, not for a public event when you are a public figure.

"Admittedly, orange is a very good colour for you, but you look like you put your finger in a plug point. And there is so much going on with this dress: is the beaded neckline meant to be African? And no, no, no to the ill-fitting bodice and the panto skirt.
