IN THE LINE OF BEAUTY: Give your skin some brown sugar
Frugal fashionistas know that the best place to find beauty products is in the kitchen.
With the right recipes they can create teabag eyepads, avocado conditioners or cucumber masks.
Many beauty products are effective as a result of nutrients and vitamins found in fruit, vegetables or other items found in household pantries. Brown sugar, high-grade oils (like extra virgin olive oil) and honey are often essential ingredients in the body scrubs used at posh spas or sold in beauty shops .
So, ditch the cosmetics store and become a kitchen beautician by making this simple but effective brown sugar body scrub - a great recipe that has been a well-kept secret for decades.
Brown sugar can make your skin silky soft and smooth - making it glow like Jennifer Lopez's - because it exfoliates, unclogs pores, replenishes and hydrates.
Brown sugar is antibacterial and contains glycolic acid, which is an alpha-hydroxy acid ingredient that keeps skin healthy.
MAKE YOUR BROWN SUGAR SCRUB
Pour ½ cup of brown sugar into a bowl and add some extra virgin olive oil (or any high-grade oil like sweet almond, coconut or jojoba oil) until the sugar is moist, but not too saturated.
Stir in a tbsp of honey to help the polish come together. Drop in ¼ tsp of fresh lemon juice (optional). If you want your scrub to smell divine, put five drops of an essential oil like jasmine, lavender or rosewood into your mixture. Mix. Store the scrub in an airtight container. It has a shelf life of a week, or longer if put in the fridge.
