Room 13 is a series of school based art studios, run by the students for the students under the guidance of an artist-in-residency, with the objective of introducing and educating students to the arts and encouraging their artistic development.
The children in charge of Room 13 studios apply for grants, order supplies, give talks at educational conferences and manage their own finances. This teaches them business etiquette and professionalism and allows them to understand that art can also be a profession that they can pursue and be successful in.
Through Room 13, children are able to discover and explore their talents at their pace and in their own space, express themselves and their creativity and discover and follow new interests.
As there is no formal syllabus or specific modules followed, the children at the schools are free to determine the activities in each Room 13. Some of the Room 13s focus on visual art (traditional painting and drawing), others do drama, poetry and/or story-telling, and others do arts and crafts.
Many of the Room 13s do a different discipline on each day of the week to be able to cater to all the different interests.
Room 13 is an art studio run by learners for learners, supported by an artist-in-residence, within a school environment. Learners manage the studio as a business, electing their own management team each year.
