A 46-year-old Spaniard participating in a beer drinking contest has died after downing seven litres of the beverage, Spanish media reported Friday.

The rules of the contest, staged in Gea y Truyols in the southern Murcia region on Wednesday, requested that participants drink as much beer as possible in 20 minutes.

Hospital watchman Joaquin G A won the competition with seven litres. But he then started vomiting, fainted, and died on the way to hospital.

The village festivities featuring the event were called off. Gea y Truyols decreed three days of mourning.
