Since July 22, 2013 the Department of Basic Education has been handing over one school a week to local communities in the Eastern Cape as part of the Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Deliver Initiative (ASIDI). The schools come complete with an administration block, library, computer lab with 27 laptops per school, science lab, Grade R centre with jungle gym and separate sanitation facilities, ablution blocks for the rest of the school and a multi-purpose centre. The weekly handover of schools will continue until November 14. The department has already embarked on the building of a second batch of 200 schools.
